Combatting climate change in Mozambique and Zimbabwe

Over the recent years, Mozambique and Zimbabwe have been experiencing an increased frequency, duration and intensity of natural disasters and extreme weather events such as landslides, floods, tropical cyclones and droughts. Climate change will only exacerbate the situation.

There is a lack of georeferenced information dealing with future climate projections and natural hazards that covers a large region with sufficiently high spatial and temporal resolution. This information is needed to optimally design climate adaptation measures risk mitigation actions.

Development of an online portal with climate data

New, downscaled historic climate data, future climate projections and related hazard information will be provided to the national meteorological institutes of Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Experts from these institutes will be trained how to interpret the results.

An online portal with all this information will be developed which will be used to design climate adaptation measures.

Expected results

Local, national and regional governments will be enabled to finetune their climate adaptation strategies and develop robust climate adaptation plans. In this way, Mozambique and Zimbabwe will be supported in the implementation of their national adaptation plan and national climate change response strategies.
