Access to clean water for vulnerable coastal regions in Morocco

Morocco’s coastal communities are facing a growing water crisis driven by climate change. In the Gharb-Chrarda-Béni Hssen region in particular, water resources are under increasing pressure due to extreme drought, unpredictable rainfall, and rising temperatures. Annual rainfall in this region could decrease by 10–30%, leading to a significant reduction in freshwater availability.

An additional challenge is saltwater intrusion, where rising sea levels allow saltwater to seep into groundwater layers, making these critical resources unusable for drinking water and irrigation. Overexploitation of groundwater exacerbates this process, with severe consequences for the region's economy and livelihoods. Agriculture, tourism, and industry are all impacted by the growing water scarcity, making communities increasingly vulnerable.

Innovative desalination technology for sustainable water management

An innovative solution for seawater desalination is offered by HydroVolta's advanced SonixED technology. Integrated into modular containers, this technology enables quick, flexible, and decentralised implementation. Powered by solar energy, the system reduces chemical usage and explores opportunities for brine reuse, including extracting valuable minerals from brine. It is suitable for various water sources, including seawater and high-salinity water, and offers a solution for a wide range of water needs.

Local communities in the Gharb-Chrarda-Béni Hssen region are actively engaged through workshops and training sessions coordinated by project partner SETGB. During workshops, residents learn about the technology, the impact of climate change, and the importance of sustainable water management. Additionally, a training programme is being implemented to educate local residents on the use and maintenance of the system. This approach promotes a sense of ownership and ensures the long-term sustainable management of water resources.

Expected results

The energy-efficient desalination technology provides a reliable source of clean drinking water and supports essential needs such as healthcare and basic services. This sustainable approach enhances water security, improves living conditions, and strengthens community resilience to the impact of a changing climate.

Through this project, Morocco makes a significant contribution to its climate and sustainability goals. It ensures access to clean drinking water, reduces dependence on contaminated sources, and supports agricultural irrigation.
